Activision The D.J. console for DJ Hero, available for Wii, Playstation 3 and XBox 360.

On Monday, Jay-Z was on the 15th floor of the Plaza Hotel, slathering mayonnaise on a turkey sandwich. He was there to hype the “Renegade Edition” of DJ Hero, the brand-new simulator from the folks who brought you Guitar Hero.

The game — which goes on sale today, starting at $120 — distills the cross-fading, beat-juggling, crab-scratching art of the D.J. into a three-button exercise in hand-eye coordination. Want to be the next Michel Gaubert, rubbing together tracks by Bowie, Blondie, Gorillaz and the Jackson 5? Start here. (Music by all the aforementioned artists is featured in this game.)

Jay-Z — or “Jay,” as his keepers called him — was picking at his sandwich. Cool as ever, dressed in a heavyweight hoodie and a Yankees cap, one had to wonder if he’d ever actually be booting up DJ Hero to battle Beyoncé (not a featured artist, by the way). “I was really, really heavy into video games growing up. I was a fanatic with sports games. Starting with Atari. From Atari, ColecoVision, Atari 2600, to PlayStation to XBox.” At the moment, it was a mediocre Plaza Hotel sandwich that he was, apparently, not fanatical about. “The bread isn’t as fresh as it could be,” he said. “You doing a review on it?” Game on, Jay.

Tell me, what do you have planned for this evening?

What, you want to take me on a date?

    I’m thinking about it.

I’m gonna go get me some pizza.

    Ooh. Where?

    In Brooklyn.

Do you have a specific pizzeria in mind?

Yes, but I can’t tell you that.

I see. Well, what do you like about this pizzeria?

It’s the best pizza I ever had in my entire life. Brick oven. Thin crust. A sauce that they have to make at three in the morning ’cause it’s a family secret – only the father and the son can make it because the people who work at the restaurant can’t know the recipe because other restaurants try to bribe them for it. It’s that good. And that’s a true story.
