When Jay states that the “streets is watching”, he’s referring to anyone who knows that you’re involved in the criminal underworld- fiends, partners, enemies, stick-up crews, law enforcement- those who will love more than anything to see you fail. This dynamic, internal and external forces that contribute or simply relish in your downfall is certainly not limited to the criminal life, is it? No matter who you are or what you do, somebody is watching. Somebody is “waiting for you to break”. Your missed opportunity is an opportunity seized by someone else. Your downfall creates the opportunity for someone else to rise.
I don’t take these lyrics to purely be about the relentlessness of competition. It’s not really about “you vs. whoever”, it’s about alertness and awareness. When you go through life damn near oblivious to its obstacles and pitfalls, then you’re almost guaranteed to stall or fail. Jay rhymes that in the drug game the streets wait for you to “make your first mistake” which can be applied to those from all walks of life.
In our lives the streets is watching and waiting and we can either fail or succeed. Mistakes happen but crucial mistakes at crucial times in your life can ruin any and all progress that you’ve made. in the midst of your successes, the streets is watching. In the midst of your failures, the streets is watching.
Where there’s opportunity, there’s competition. Work hard, be successful, enjoy your success and stay focus. Part of stayi... ng focus is recognizing the elements of life that threaten your success and dealing with these internal and external forces accordingly and effectively.
You can’t ignore it!
